In order to receive Six Sigma certification and bring your business closer to bottom-line results you will need to finish a Six Sigma project. There are several projects to choose from, following is a brief outline of each program:
The Six Sigma Certification combined with Lean Flow and Lean Six Sigma provides training that teaches businesses how to recognize and remove non-productive products and behavior that diminishes bottom-line results.
The Design for Six Sigma (DFSS) teaches businesses how to create an error free product or service; uniting the methods used in Six Sigma, Lean Flow and Lean Six Sigma while incorporating consumer feedback and simulation techniques. Together these systems result in a faster bottom-line return and build on the idea of non-productive time.
Champions
The Six Sigma program works because we engage proven business leaders who sponsor Six Sigma projects. These business leaders are titled “Champions” and educated in the fundamentals of Six Sigma. Champions are expected to mentor Six Sigma project leaders or “Belts” as they seek to introduce the Six Sigma approach into their business. The Champions encourage and support their Belts in the proper use of tracking and projecting organization results. These results are defined as:
* Establish project selection criteria
* Establish and use communication process
* Approve projects ensure linkage to strategy and key needs
* Review the process every 3-6 months
* Select Project Champions
* Establish reward and recognition structure
* Provide needed resources and training
* Link rewards to performance
* Review Black Belt and Green Belt projects monthly
* Be accountable for the success of the effort
DMAIC
The Six Sigma approach is described by the acronym DMAIC - Define, Measure, Analyze, Improve and Control. These approaches are further defined below:
Define
Define a group to improve productivity, recognize the customer’s needs or requirements and construct a plan for improvement. Define the plan so that it states the problem clearly and establishes firm measurable results.
Measure
Establish Key Process Steps and Key Inputs (measurements) to ensure the changes are creating results. These steps will be used to see if the plan of improvement is achieving the desired goals.
Analyze
Analyze the problems needing change. This analysis is important; although, through the process of definition and measurement businesses will often find that they have already executed a system of change prior to this stage. Analysis provides an opportunity to ensure that nothing is missed throughout the process.
Improve
Improvement is a painful and exciting process which allows a business to develop systems and opportunities to educate the team and bring them together creating a strong productive community.
Control
Control is dependent on how strong the previous phases are established. The better developed a project is the stronger control a business will have on the key components of this project and in continuing to maintain a productive and successful business.
Training Six Sigma is a methodology that uses data to monitor, control and improve operational performance by eliminating and preventing imperfections in products and associated processes. Six Sigma strategies are available to managers and employees who have little or no prior experience with the methodology. Six Sigma training is separated into two levels of competency, Six Sigma Green Belt and Six Sigma Black Belt. The length of the college program depends on the desired degree of proficiency. Coursework can range from an eight-week program all the way to a sixteen-week program.
