The primary section of the telecommunications industry is telephone communications, which include wire line and wireless networks. They are broken up into the following categories:
* Wire line networks - use wires and cables to connect customers’ premises to central offices which contain switching equipment that routes content to its final destination or to another switching center.
* Wireless networks - operate through the transmission of signals over networks of radio towers. The signal is then transmitted through the antenna into the wire line network. Other wireless services include beeper, paging, and Internet access.
* Third generation (3G) wireless access - allows high speed data transmission and better Internet access.
* Fixed wireless service - connects the telephone and/or internet wiring system to an antenna, instead of a telephone line.
* Telecommunications includes voice, video, and Internet communications services.
* Job growth will be controlled by advances in technology, mergers, and outsourcing.
* Those who possess the most updated technical knowledge will have the best job opportunities.
What Telecommunications Field Will You Study?
Telecommunications equipment installers and repairers – Learn to install, repair, and maintain sophisticated communications equipment and cables. Also, set up, rearrange, and remove switching and dialing equipment in central offices.
Cable installers – Learnt to connect a television set to the cable serving the neighborhood. Wireless and satellite service installers attach antennas or satellite dishes to the house.
Telephone operators – Learn to connect telephone calls, help customers with specialized requests, supply telephone numbers, and make emergency assistance available.
Customer service representatives – Learn to assist customers in understanding various services offered by telecommunications providers.
Financial, information, and records clerks – Learn to keep service records, bill customers, create company reports, among other tasks.
Engineers – Learn to plan cable and microwave routes, install central office and PBX equipment, and expand existing structures, as well as solve other engineering problems.
Network systems and data communications analysts – Learn to design, develop, and debug software products.
Telecommunications specialists – Learn to coordinate the installation of the systems described and possibly provide maintenance and training.
